Allansons Department Store in Grange Road, Birkenhead.  1950    No.039

This photo shows Grange Road when it was a vibrant shopping street running between Argyll Street and Charing Cross.
The distinctive Art Deco tower of Allansons dominated the south end of the road, opposite the high walls of the Convent which stretched down to Borough Road.
Beatties took over the site of Allansons in 1960, and then Grange Road was utterly changed when Birkenhead Market was re-housed there after the "accidental" fire in the early 1970s.
The largely ornamental tower was deemed not "modern" enough, and was unceremoniously demolished just as the interest in Art Deco was being revived in the early 1990s.
